Biographical Note
Hugh Montgomery was a Methodist minister who was born in Ireland in 1839. Anna Roberts was born in 1842. They were married in November 1865. By 1880 they resided in Norwich, Conn. In 1885 Hugh was appointed a Prosecuting Agent in New London County. Hugh was active in the temperance movement, giving lectures and publishing a book, The Way Out: A Solution of the Temperance Question (1895). They moved to various Massachusetts towns including Worcester, Woburn, and Marblehead where Hugh died on May 5, 1898. Anna died in 1939.

Scope and Content
The collection is comprised of correspondence between Hugh Montgomery and Anna Roberts during their courtship from March to October 1865. It contains nineteen letters between Hugh and Anna and six related envelopes. The content of the letters is varied and includes topics such as religion, family, the challenges of being a minister and being apart from one another, and life in the Northeast. Hugh Montgomery wrote mostly from East Haverhill, New Hampshire while Anna Roberts wrote from East Hartford, Connecticut.
