Biographical NoteRichard (McGee) Magee was born in 1837 in Ireland and married Jane Furgeson. Magee enlisted as a private from Bethlehem in Company K of the 17th Regiment Connecticut Volunteer Infantry on August 15 and was mustered in on August 28, 1862. He was awarded a medal of honor by Lt. Colonel William H. Noble after the siege on Fort Wagner and Sumter "for conspicous bravery during the historic siege." Richard mustered out of service on July 19, 1865 and returned to a life of farming. Richard Magee died in 1917 at the age of 80. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and ContentSeries 1. Diaries, 1863-1869, consist of five day-to-day diaries kept by Richard Magee both during and after the Civil War. Series 2. Miscellaneous, undated, contains an article describing Richard Magee's heroic actions at Fort Wagner, the medal presented to him "for conspicuous bravery during the historic siege", and a reprint of the statement requested by Richard Magee from Lt.
