| Abstract: | The Connecticut Board of Examiners of Embalmers was established in 1903. Its function is to examine and license embalmers and to make and enforce regulations for the practice of that profession. In 1941 the act was amended to include provisions for licensing funeral directors. Now known as the Connecticut Board of Examiners of Embalmers and Funeral Directors, the Board works closely with the Department of Public Health. |

Historical Note
The Connecticut Board of Examiners of Embalmers was established on July 1, 1903. Its function is to examine and license embalmers and to make and enforce regulations for the practice of that profession. In 1941 the act was amended to include provisions for licensing funeral directors. In 1951, the name was changed to what it is now known as the Connecticut Board of Examiners of Embalmers and Funeral Directors. By 1977, the Connecticut Board of Examiners of Embalmers and Funeral Directors was terminated as a separate agency, but functions and same name were transferred to the Department of Health Services which was later changed to the Department of Public Health. Currently the Office of Practitioner Licensing and Certification in the Bureau of Healthcare Systems of the Department of Public Health carries out licensing functions. The Board of Examiners of Embalmers and Funeral Directors hears and decides "matters concerning suspension or revocation licensure," adjudicates "complaints filed against practitioners licensed under this chapter," and imposes "sanctions where appropriate." [See Connecticut General Statutes, Section 20-209a.] The Governor appoints members.
