Portrayal of Private William Webb, Civil War Soldier of the 29^th Connecticut Volunteers

Now the reason for the delay was the threat that the Confederate Army put out saying, “If any white Officer leads a group of colored soldiers, we’re going to pluck out his eyes and cut off his tongue.” So, no white Officer wanted to lead our men. 

But oh praise and thanks be to God for Colonel William Wooster formerly of the 20^th. Colonel Wooster was brave and he led our men into the war.  The day was April 18^th and we were down in New Haven.

(Singing) “We look like men marching on; we look like men at war; we look like men marching on; we look like men going to war.”

Oh what a feeling to look like a man! Somebody who was thought of as just property or nothing; but now we were standing on the streets of New Haven, and we were looking like men.
 

“Hi Mom, Cousin Elizabeth.”

Oh, it was our time to shine; it was our time to do our part and take part in this war.
