Portrayal of Private William Webb, Civil War Soldier of the 29th Connecticut Volunteers

The weather began to change - and it’s October. And, I remember the weather changing because I started to get cold and the musket that I was carrying, that was really getting cold, and all the wool I was wearing wasn’t keeping me warm.

And, we had to go to Kell House. Now, Kell House was this landmark that we had to fight at. When we were there,
“Fire-Load, Fire-Load, Fire-Load.”

Two days it went on. We lost eighty soldiers in that battle. Eighty men from Hartford and surrounding towns - gone in that battle. But after that battle, we were finally recognized.

We were placed in the First Brigade and we were sent to guard Newmarket Road.

Now, Newmarket Road was this territory that if we were to lose ground, we were going to lose the war. But if we were to gain ground, we were getting closer and closer to Richmond, Virginia, which was our destination.
