Agency History :

1935, CGS sec. 1587c, State Park and Forest Commissioner is authorized to act as overseer of all tribes of Indians residing in the state.

1941, Per Public Act 132, the Commissioner of Welfare is authorized to act as overseer of all tribes of Indians residing in the state.

1973, Indian Affairs Council established per P.A. 73-660, placed under Dept. of Environmental Protection for administrative purposes only.

List of Heads :

The Council consists of three members appointed by the Governor, and one representative of each tribe appointed the the respective tribes (Mohegan, Schaghticoke, Mashantucket Pequot, Golden Hill Paugussett, Paucatuck Eastern Pequot).   Each year the Register and Manual includes the names of those appointed.  Beginning in 2007, the Register and Manual also listed a Coordinator.
