Lesson Three Summary

These three categories of materials work together to document all flavors and varieties of history. Each category of materials is managed using a particular body of knowledge and standards.

An organization and staff that specializes in that body of knowledge and standards manage each category of materials.

  • Archives specialize in managing historical records.
  • Museums specialize in managing historical artifacts and objects.
  • Libraries specialize in managing published material.

You should be able to categorize your own holdings appropriately; then, you will be able to use the tools and practices that are "right for the job."
