Lesson Two Summary
Your Collecting Policy
Your answers to the questions in Lessons 1 and 2 have guided you through the process of writing the elements of your own collection policy. Based on your answers, you can use our simple policy template to draft your own policy.
Remember that this is your policy. A template cannot meet all of your particular needs, so you should revise it appropriately, adding the elements you need, expanding on sections if needed, until you have made it your own.
If you have other staff members whose input would be helpful, make sure you show them your document as a starting point and work on your policy together. Once your collecting policy is completed, your governing body should officially approve it.
Remember to review your policy on a regular basis. Use it as the guiding principles for the management of your collections. It is truly a fundamental document to a historical records program.
