The State Library Board met on May 20, 2002 at the new off site facility on Van Block Avenue in Hartford. A tour of the facility, comprised largely of storage space for CSL collections was offered immediately following the meeting. State Librarian, Ken Wiggin reported that CSL is one of sixty organizations nationally to be awarded a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission for the second year of a Judicial Records project. He also expressed his appreciation to the Department of Education for assisting CSL in distributing two documents which focused on developing summer reading lists for both elementary and middle schools and high schools.
Mary Engels, president of the Connecticut Library Association (CLA) reported that their annual conference was an unqualified success with almost 1,000 people attending. Ann Clark, Board chairperson thanked Ms. Engels for her superb professionalism and excellent service to the Board. Karen McNulty of the Avon Public Library will be CLA's new president and will begin reporting to the State Library Board at its next meeting. Les Kozerowitz, Director of the Norwalk Public Library is vice president, president-elect.
CLA's Legislative Committee has issued three legislative alerts to their links, requesting that readers contact their legislators in support of restoration of iCONN funds. A small CLA group attended the American Library Associations (ALA) Legislative Day in Washington, DC.
Pat Holloway, chair of the Advisory Council on Library Planning and Development (ACLPD), reported that the council is writing a new five-year LSTA plan. New objectives incorporate program models like the Gates Foundation project. The council is also evaluating projects based on their impact on library users.
Betsy Bray, chair of the Cooperating Library Service Units (CLSU), reported on Continuing Education (CE) activities. Dorothy Willett, President of the Association of Connecticut Library Boards (ACLB) reported on the planning for the third Annual Connecticut Library Leadership Conference and ACLB Awards Dinner that will be held on October 10, 2002 at the Water's Edge Inn and Resort in Westbrook. Friends president Marge Storrs reported that they have been visiting libraries around the state. Their annual meeting will be on June 8, 2003 at the Guildford Free Library.
The State Library staff recommendation for the use of returned Library Services and Construction Act Grant Title II Funds has been approved. The Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is allowing CSL to use funds from a returned $100,000 LSCA grant for construction or technology projects for public libraries, such as e-branches. This grant will fund a kiosk, costs for customized installation, implementation and the first year's maintenance contract.
The members of the State Library Board unanimously and gratefully acknowledged Walter Brahm's dedicated service to the State of Connecticut. Mr. Wiggin will forward the Resolution to the Brahm family.
