Head, Information Services Department, University of Connecticut Health

The UCHC Library is seeking an energetic, technologically proficient
team leader and player to fill the position of Head of the Information
Services Department. The Dept. Head supervises 3 professional librarians
and two parttime staff in meeting the research, patient care and education
information needs of the UCHC community. IS staff are very active in
information resource training of faculty, staff and students.
The Dept. Head is responsible for training staff and acting as
resource person for expert computer-assisted literature searching; setting
the goals for and coordinating the managment of the print and electronic
reference collection; evaluating electronic reference sources and
recommending their purchase for placement on the UCHC network; managing
online database contracts and electronic systems and services; directing the
scheduling for coverage of the public information desk; determining
information needs of users and developing and delivering educational
programs to meet these needs; developing short- and long-range plans for the
department; writing the department's annual report and budget request;
supervising the Library's audiovisual services; collecting and analyzing
departmental statistics; providing regional reference services; and
coordinating the Library's information products - newsletter, Website,
electronic and print topical information guides.
Applicant qualifications include an MLS from an ALA-accredited school
of library science; minimum of three years relevant experience as a
professional librarian in a health sciences library, two of these as a
medical reference librarian; online searching and electronic reference
experience; administrative and supervisory experience; demonstrated
experience with user education; experience with microcomputer applications
and bibliographic control software; and demonstrated interpersonal, oral and
written communication skills. Preferred qualifications include familiarity
with automated library systems; knowledge of UNIX operating systems; comfort
working in the ambiguity created by the rapid changes in the IT environment;
and active participation in national, regional and local professional
organizations.
The position carries the rank of Librarian 3 or 4 depending on
qualifications. It is a 40 hour work week with the minimum salary of
$50,101 and excellent benefits.

The University of Connecticut Health Center Library has a staff of 36,
17.5 of them professional librarians. Library staff operate in a highly
technical environment including a NOTIS online system, a variety of OVID
databases, and several standalone electronic workstations including Science
Citation Index and the Health Reference Center. The Library serves as the
Regional Medical Library for New England in the National Network of
Libraries of Medicine supported by the National Library of Medicine.
