This second annual event held at the NetWorld + Interop 97 trade show

Vying for the title were the top four search engines used by millions of
Web surfers every day: AltaVista, Excite, HotBot, and Infoseek.

PC Computing asked the gurus behind these powerful search engines to
fight for the coveted title. In short, the world's expert Internet
searchers battled it out with the powerful engines they created.

Rules to make it a fair fight, we held the contest over two days and
eight heats. With a total of 30 possible points, the engine with the
highest score at the end of the eight rounds would be crowned the winner
of the PC Computing Search Engine Challenge.
