Yes, certainly laser printers are quieter, and less expensive in terms of
supples. But if the color capability saves you from having pictures cut out
of books, isn't it cheaper in the long run? I do not believe color laser
printers (if they actually do exist) have come down enough in price to be
affordable for libraries.
Children use the printer in my library almost exclusively for printing
pictures to add to their reports. Adults use the printer in the children's
area to print signs, cards, etc.
I think the cost and speed are important in some situations, but offering
a color printer for public use in the library is worth the extra time and
cost. I like my HP, too, but it's an inkjet!
