Subject: RE: centennial celebrations

Darien Library celebrated its centennial in 1994 with a year of special =
activities, including : Centennial Lecture series, publication of the =
History of the Library (book) and a video history;essay contest for =
children "Why I like the Darien LIbrary" (a big success); and special =
"centennial" book bags for donors who gave $100 to the library fund =
drive ("$100 for a hundred years...) We asked the Chairman of the Board =
of Finance and the two local newspaper editors to judge the contest, =
(along with a grade school writing teacher) As a result, we got good =
support from the Finance chair( he had to read over 50 essays about how =
wonderful the library was) and good press coverage. We targeted the =
centennial celebration in the fund drive for that year. Our whole =
packet on the centennial may be available from ALA. We entered the John =
Cotton Dana award but didn't win. I think they lend copies of the =
entries to libraries. If you want to explore our activites further, you =
can contact me direct: louise@darien.lib.ct.us Louise Berry, =
Director, Darien Library
