Subject: RE: PC security software
We have been using Fortress on some of our PCs for the past 6 months or
so. It is working very well on a couple of Windows95 machines which are
used mainly for Internet access. We had a lot of problems with people
adding programs and deleting files on this before we installed the
Fortres software. Not a single problem since we put on Fortres.
We also tested Fortres on an older computer running Windows for
Workgroups but it seemed to be crashing our applications. I believe
that is because this computer - used for database searching on our
Novell network - was straining already and the addition of Fortress was
the straw that broke the camels back.
Although Fortres has a ton of options, it is pretty easy to administer.
You do have to test all your software to see where users must have
privileges - for example, we had to enable read, write and delete to the
cache directory for Netscape. I talked our systems people into buying a
site license for our entire institution.
