Subject: AN OFFER THAT DOESN'T COME EVERY DAY!!!!!

WANTED -- CHAPTER MEMBERS WHO HAVE THE TIME AND INTEREST
--IN THE NEXT MONTH-- TO WORK ON ANN SYMONS' PRESIDENTIAL
INITIATIVES.

PLEASE FORWARD TO ALL APPROPRIATE CHAPTER LISTS AND
INDIVIDUALS IN YOUR STATE ORGANIZATION!!!

Those of us with strong Chapter ties are in a wonderful position to help
frame the initiatives and activities of Ann Symons' ALA presidency for
1998-1999. She has asked me to tell you that she wants broad input
from all Chapters as she develops her presidential program, Let's make
certain that all of us at the "grassroots" share our suggestions--and
help plan for Ann's THEME, INITIATIVES, AND PROGRAMS that will make
a real impact for our library users and the profession within our states
and communities.

Our job in the next month is to work on a draft plan for Ann's
presidential year.

Ann's year will have an overall emphasis on Intellectual Freedom and a
theme that interests all ALA members, in all positions and types of
libraries. There will be an advocacy piece for kids, e.g., kids need
libraries, particularly school libraries. Ann plans to make sure that there
are ties to the American Reads Challenge.

Here are some of the elements we need to discuss
electronically:

1. OVERALL THEME: We know that the National Library Week theme
for 1998-1999 will end with "@the library." Ann will work with the
National Library Week Committee to present her ideas and ours.
Consider "Learn" as a part of the theme. Keep in mind that intellectual
freedom will be an umbrella for specific projects.

2. IDEAS FOR PRESIDENT'S PROGRAMS AT ANNUAL CONFERENCE
AND MIDWINTER

3. SUGGESTIONS FOR OPENING GENERAL SESSION SPEAKER

4. URGENTLY NEED YOUR SUGGESTIONS FOR WAYS IN WHICH WE
CAN MAKE THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE ALA PRESIDENTIAL
INITIATIVES AND OUR CHAPTER ACTIVITIES DURING ANN'S YEAR, i.e.,
activities that we can do for our Chapter conferences, projects within
our states, etc.

If you are interested in working on this project and sharing
your ideas, please respond to the Chapter list, and Gerald will
subscribe you to a "new" list that we are setting up for this
project. Ann will join us on the list.

Our deadline for the first pass on A PLAN is August 20.

This is one of the finest opportunities for Chapters in some time!! We
invite your participation--as does Ann.

ALA Chapter Relations Committee
