Jim, Gwinnett County's level of service and funding is remarkable. They
benefit from the enormous economic growth of the tony Atlanta burbs. Ed
McCabe, the Assoc. Dir. of Technology there described Newt's district as
north of Gwinnett. Ginrich's Sixth is composed of Cobb and Forsyth counties,
and has several affluent areas of homes in the 500K-1 million dollar value
range.
Gwinnett is not without their challenges however. They're featured in the
current American Libraries on p. 23 in the Updates section. The original
Gwinnett-Forsyth Regional Lib. was dissolved just one year ago, and the
blurb describes ongoing internal Board disputes and materials challenges.
Ed mentioned that they've recently changed some loan policies and have now
established a labeled book shelf dedicated to controversial materials, all
in response to those challenges.
The chicken and egg thing about local funding is always intriguing. I too
take the high road, sure that continuous improvement is recognized and
rewarded. (Of course managerial responsibility requires me to be optimistic
as well!)
It's funny for me to realize how much I picked-up at the Leadership
Institute about the characteristics of the other library jurisdictions. I
must have spent a lot of time in the pool and at the "Whistling Swan" pub!
