Those of us whose eyes (but not bodies or minds) have been middle-aged for
some time have long since known about this problem. The best solution I've
found has been a pair of full-size (not half-lenses) with a middle-distance
prescription. My computer screen is further away than the reading portion
of my bifocals allows, and my distance prescription would dictate a monitor
about six feet away. My optometrist knew exactly what I needed, and if
your optometrist doesn't, find a new one. The mid-distance lenses lets me
see (a little fuzzily) at a distance, so these glasses could work at a
reference desk if they had to.

Let me note that regular bifocals also don't work for watching TV in bed -
you're trying to see twelve feet away with lenses meant for 18 inches. But
they're great for reading in bed.
