Subject: Banned Books Week

Sept. 22, 1997

As Banned Books Week kicks off today a dozen or more sites plan to offer
content recognizing the event, mostly by offering information about books
that have been banned in the past and by calling attention to book
censorship they say still exists.

Sites include the American Library Association
(http://www.ala.org/bbooks/), the American Booksellers Foundation for Free
Expression (http://www.bookweb.org/abffe/394.html), and Book Stacks
Unlimited, (http://www.banned.books.com/art.html).

"We really felt strongly about the topic and wanted to go full force in
taking a look at what's going on today," said Jenna Schnuer, senior editor
at BookWire (http://www.bookwire.com/), an online site that provides
reviews and information about books. In addition to providing a historical
timeline charting banned books in the United States, this site will offer
essays on censorship from popular authors.
