Instructors:
Joyce G. Saricks has been Literature and Audio Services Coordinator at the
Downers Grove Public Library since 1983, when she and Nancy Brown created a
readers' advisory service there. Together they wrote Readers' Advisory
Service in the Public Library (American Library Association, 1989, revised
an updated by Joyce in 1997) Joyce Saricks has presented more than forty
workshops on readers' advisory for public libraries and is a frequent
speaker at professional conferences. She was the 1989 recipient of PLA's
Allie Beth Martin Award. Saricks holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and
German from the University of Kansas, a Master of Arts in Comparative
Literature from the University of Wisconsin, and a Masters of Arts in
Library Science & Education from the University of Chicago
Duncan Smith is a nationally recognized trainer in the area of readers'
advisory services. Smith is also the author of several articles on readers'
advisory services, including two chapters in Guiding the Reader to the Next
Book (Neal-Schumann, 1996)--the first book to focus on research in the
area of readers' advisory services. In 1997, he received the Margaret E.
Monroe Award for Library Adult Services from the American Library
Association's Reference and User Services Division. He is currently the
product manager for CARL Corporation's new electronic readers' advisory
resource, NoveList. Smith is well known for his work as a trainer. Prior
to joining CARL Corporation, Smith served for nine years as the continuing
education coordinator at North Carolina Central University's School of
Library and Information Sciences. He has worked in public libraries in
North Carolina and Georgia. He holds Master of Science in Library Science
and Bachelor of Arts in English degree from the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Directions:

Southbound on I-91- In Cromwell, left Exit 22S onto Rt. 9 South. In
Middletown, right exit onto Rt. 17 which makes a left onto S. Main St. From
that point it's about one mile to MLSC- a low red-brick building on the
left soon after Highland Ave. intersects Rt. 17.
Northbound on I-91- In Meriden,- Exit onto Rt. 66 east. In
Middletown, watch for Rt. 3 junction on left but continue on Rt. 66 Take a
right at the next light onto High Street. High St. becomes Highland.
At the intersection, right onto Rt. 17. MLSC is a low red-brick building on
the left.
Northbound on Rt. 9- Exit 11. Left onto Randolph Road west (Rt.
155) Two miles to Rt. 17, turn right north) MLSC , a low red-brick building
is in the first block on your right.
To Portland Public Library
Rt.72 Eastbound from New Britain -Stay with Rt. 72 onto Rt. 9
Right at traffic light beneath Arrigoni Bridge. One block to right onto
Rt. 66. Cross bridge to Portland. Right at second light. One block to
Freestone Avenue. Parking lot on left.
Rt. 66 Eastbound from Meriden-After crossing Arrigoni Bridge, right
at second light. One block to Freestone Avenue. Parking lot on left.Rt. 2
Westbound from Norwich- In Colchester, take Rt. 16 west to Rt. 66 in
Cobalt. After crossing railroad tracks, right onto Cross Street. One block.
Left onto Freestone Avenue. Three blocks to library on right.
I-91 Southbound from Hartford- In Cromwell, left exit (22S) onto
Rt. 9. Right at traffic light beneath Arrigoni Bridge. One block to
right onto Rt. 66. Cross bridge to Portland. Right at second light. One

Rt. Northbound from Old Saybrook-Left at traffic light beneath
