I have toyed around with the idea of accepting the Connecticut Driver's
license as a substitute for the library card. That is, you could get a card
if you wanted one, but could just use your license to identify yourself (well... duh?)
instead of the library card. The driver's license has a bar code on it which
I'm pretty sure just about any scanner will read. We use a scanner for our
library card now so it would just take a rather simple software change to
recognize that it was a license # and index on that number instead of the
library card number.

The plan was to make it totally optional so people who are concerned about
it can opt for the old card. I checked with the DMV and they indicated that
there was no problem using the card for that purpose.
Note that any CT resident can get a CT ID card for (I believe) $5.

If there is interest from others in this idea, I might be motivated to bump its
priority (from idle to low).
