Dear Conntechers:

The following message is from Ann Montgomery Smith, Chair of the Joint
Project. Your input in helping the Joint Project to choose just the right name and
logo is most appreciated.
Your responses should be sent to Amy Terlaga, ATERLAGA@BIBLIO.ORG.
I am sorry the message sent 11/7/97 was so garbled. If this one doesn't read
well, please let me know.

Thank you,
Anne G. Calvert
Administrative Assistant for the Joint Project

WANTED: A NAME (contest)

WHO ARE WE? The Joint Project of Bibliomation, CONNECT, and LION is seeking
suggestions for a name and logo in order to create an identity and for
purposes of incorporation.

Your help is needed now. Suggestions and rationale for name/logo should be
sent to Amy Terlaga at <ATERLAGA@BIBLIO.ORG> no later than December 1st
1997. The winner will be awarded a suitable prize.

The following is a summary of the status of the Joint Project and sample
name/logo to inspire you:

The Joint Project is making considerable headway in meeting the objectives
set for it in the June 13, 1997, Memorandum of Agreement.

Recent achievements include:
by-laws and certificate of incorporation being prepared by a committee
chaired by Laurel Goodgion, (CRLC-Portland).
mentor from the National Executive Service Corps identified to assist the
JP in getting "outside the box," strategic planning, organization, etc.
administrative assistance contracted for from LION.
all networks moving forward with standardizing local equipment
requirements, establishing frame relay and stabilizing library systems to
permit a rational and reasoned approach to a possible joint system.
priority investigation of CARL and III conducted. JPRG has decided not to
limit a procurement process to these two systems. Future system will NOT be
a legacy system.
structured analysis, a methodology for obtaining and prioritizing system
requirements, will be utilized to prepare for the procurement process.
Partnership+ has been incorporated into JPRG as its first project.
Services continue to be provided to LEAP and Groton/Waterford on a fee basis.
JPRG monitors CLN progress for actions which may affect the direction of
the JP.

NOW we need an identity--both a name and a logo--so that we can incorporate
and provide members with a rallying point. (Perhaps we need a flag too?)

The CHALLENGE is to find something better than BroCcoLi: A stalk of
broccoli in an equilateral red triangle with one side parallel to the left
margin and the point facing right.

BroCcoLi is appropriate because:
	The triangle suggest forward movement.
Broccoli incorporates the first letters of our founding networks without
focusing entirely and exclusively upon them.
The triangle has three sides and three angles for the three networks.
Broccoli is neutral (except for George Bush).
Broccoli consists of a large number of handsome florets on one sturdy stalk.
Broccoli is rich in vitamins, good for you, attractive as vegetables go,
affordable, and readily available to everyone.
It's memorable and unique as a symbol. (suggestion of Ann Montgomery
Smith, Chair JPRG, CRLC-New Britain)
