ALA President Barbara Ford has asked me to send the following
message to Council on her behalf as a followup to yesterday's
announcement about the new ALA Executive Director.

In particular, Barbara wanted to direct Council's  to the last paragraph of

AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR APPOINTED

William R. Gordon, director of the Prince George's County Memorial
Library System in Hyattsville, Md., will become the new executive
director of the American Library Association (ALA) on March 1, 1998.

The announcement was made today by ALA President Barbara J. Ford
on behalf of the ALA Executive Board.

"We are delighted to announce Bill Gordon's appointment as executive
director of ALA," said Ford. "He brings strong credentials, a solid track
record, and a wealth of library experience to the position. The Executive
Board feels he is extremely well qualified to lead the Association into the
next century. We look forward with great enthusiasm to working with
him."

Gordon, who has been with the Prince George's County system since
1977, has also served as director of  the Arrowhead (Minn.) Library
System, the Pocatello (Idaho) Public Library, and the Southeastern Idaho
Public Library Agency and as assistant director of the Renton (Wash.)
Public Library. He holds an M.A. in Library Science from the University of
Denver and a B.A. degree from Baker University in Baldwin, Kansas.

Gordon will attend ALA's Midwinter Meeting in New Orleans this coming
January as ALA Executive Director-designate.

Under the terms of Gordon's contract, all information regarding his
salary, benefits, and other job perquisites will be made public. For
Council's information, Mr. Gordon's contract is for three years (through
February 28, 2001), and his salary will be $165,000 for the first year of
the contract. He will be eligible for future annual salary increases based
on performance, but the annual increase may not exceed two times the
percentage of performance merit increase available to other ALA staff.
In addition, since Mr. Gordon will not be eligible to participate in ALA's
TIAA-CREF retirement plan for his first two years of employment, during
those two years, 3% of his salary will be deposited into a deferred
compensation plan. He will receive up to $10,000 for moving expenses
and will have his expenses covered for up to two househunting trips to
Chicago between now and March 1. If he performs work for ALA
between now and March 1, he will be compensated at the rate of $500 a
day. Mr. Gordon is also eligible to receive the regular benefits accorded
all ALA employees (health, dental, and life insurance; 22 days of paid
vacation, 12 days of paid sick leave, and 11 paid holidays per year;
eligibility for participation in TIAA-CREF after two years of employment;
eligibility for tuition reimbursement program,etc. ). No other financial or
contractual perquisites, bonuses, or additional compensation have been
included in this contract or made to Mr. Gordon in writing or verbally by
the Association.
