Subject: Registration Library Cards

I manage the circulation dept. of the New Haven Public Library and am
looking to overhaul our policies and procedures in registering patrons for
library cards. We currently ask New Haven residents for two froms of ID:
one a picture, the other something that establishes residence (checking
account, mail, bill, etc.). They then fill out a paper application (which
has to be sorted and filed); as well as the online record. Children get a
card if they can sign their own name.

In an effort to streamline this process and cut down on the amount of
library cards issued, I am thinking about totally dispensing with paper
applications and proof of residence; in favor of a photo ID like a driver's
license (for adults) with a barcode attached to the back of that (like TOMMY
K's!); and children linked to the parents' borrowing record, getting their
own card at 13 with the barcode from that later affixed to their licenses
when they get one.

Is anyone else experimenting with these procedures? I would appreciate any
feedback. Please reply to bernardo@connix.com.
