Conntechers,
Some updates on USF.
The ALA Office for Information Technology Policy has sent out the following notice.
"First, the final forms hit the mail on Thursday and Friday. They were sent in envelopes from the
Schools and Libraries Corporation to the director of every public library system in the country, and
to the superintendent
of every school district. According to the SLC, they were also sent to all of the state libraries
and state education agencies. If you do not receive a copy of the forms, they are available from
the SLC. The most recent word is that the forms will also be available electronically by the end of
this week. We will keep you abreast of the
situation."
At the State Library we plan to duplicate this mailing using our public library list. You may get
duplicate copies but I'd like to make sure everyone gets a copy.
Also from ALA OITP
" the SLC hotline is up and available. While they are still in a
ramp-up mode (given that they don't have all the answers yet, either),
please feel free to ask them questions. They are putting together
customer support mechanisms to answer your questions. The phone
number is 888/203.8100. Questions can also be emailed to the SLC at
question@slcfund.org"
A couple of notes on things I learned at the session I attended in Washington last week that I
didn't include in our workshops last month:
1. Both form 470 and 471 must be submitted within the 75 day "window" to be considered in that
window - not just 470. This is because your process has to be complete through the contract phase
for the SLC to determine the level of funding to commit for you.
2. At our workshops several people asked about the difficulty of signing a contract before they
have the commitment from SLC on their discount. You won't get that discount until after the 75 day
window, by which time you have to sign a contract. The answer seems to be that you will have to
include contract language to the effect that the contract is contingent on SLC funding. You also
may want to include language that the vendor will comply with the requirements for SLC discount
eligibility.
3. After you submit form 470 to the website (you will be able to do so electronically), SLC will
send you a confirmation which will include a date that your application was posted on their website.
This is the date that you use to calculate the 28 day waiting period before you can sign a
contract.
4. The SLC has not made a final decision about NCES Library Codes. We'll have to wait for them to
tell us the numbers to use. The school numbers are available at the website listed in the
instructions.
