A. "Getting Ready for 'Ready Reference' on the Web"
This hands-on session will cover how to find, select,
evaluate, and organize ready reference sites and general
reference sites found on the Web. There will be an
opportunity to share your favorite sites with your peers,
and also time to explore sites discussed. The session will
be presented by Marcia Stuart, Reference Librarian at the
Public Library of New London.
B. "Customer Service: Policies and Patrons"
This two- hour workshop will cover such topics as the legal
basis for library policies in Connecticut, guidelines for
developing and implementing policies, and recognizing an
unworkable, unenforceable, or outdated policy. The lecture
portion of the program will be followed by a brief question
and answer session and then a facilitated workshop in which
audience members will troubleshoot specific policies from
their libraries (bring a sample policy from work).
Presented by Kate Byroade, Head of Circulation & Tech.
Services at Manchester Public Library.
C. "Things You Didn't Know About Cataloging AV Materials"
As libraries purchase CDs, videos, computer software and
other non-book materials, catalogers are faced with
cataloging all sorts of different things. Dodie Gaudet from
the Donohue Group, Inc. will provide a review of cataloging
rules focusing on the specifics of sound recordings
(audiocassettes and CDs), video recordings (videocassettes &
DVDs), and computer software. Recommended for staff with
some cataloging experience who want to learn the details of
cataloging AV materials.
D. "Yoga & Meditation for Relaxation"
You have seen it on OPRAH! Now experience firsthand the
many benefits of Yoga. Join Yoga teacher Dawn Lesinski for a
relaxing and stress reducing experience. Gentle Yoga
postures, breathing techniques, and guided meditation will
leave you feeling refreshed and energized. No prior
experience of fitness level required.
Lunch Roundtables - Sign-up Required 12:30 - 1:30 p.m.
Network over lunch with peers having similar interests or
job responsibilities. Choose either Public Libraries,
Academic/Special Libraries, School/Children's Services, or
Technical Services.
1:45 - 3:45 p.m.
Session II: (choose one of the following)
A. "Getting Ready for 'Ready Reference' on the Web"
Due to the overwhelming interest in this subject, this
afternoon session is a repeat of the morning session.
B. "Reader's Advisory: What is it? What does it do? How
do I learn how to do it?"
For many libraries dependent upon support staff, Reader's
Advisory may sound a bit scary. Actually, when broken down
to its basic elements, it is the process whereby we help our
patrons track down and select something to read, whether it
be fiction or factual. During this session, a panel will
discuss their successful (and not-so-successful) methods of
RA, tips and tricks, and other aspects of the process. A
questions-and-answer period will follow. Please join us for
a fun and fact-filled session! Panel led by Kelly Marszycki,
Director, Rathbun Library, East Haddam.
C. "Interlibrary Loan: Today and Tomorrow"
Steve Cauffman, Interlibrary Loan Coordinator for the CT
Digital Library, will present an overview of the various
systems through which resource sharing is accomplished in
Connecticut. He will also talk about new ILL management
software packages that allow ILL systems to interoperate
with each other.
"CULS: The Connecticut Union List of Serials, Yesterday,
Today and Tomorrow"
Janis Lefkowitz, CULS Project Coordinator for the CT State
Library, will talk about the history of the CT union list,
what it was like 30 years ago, and why it has stood the test
of time. She will touch on its relationship to reQuest and
the CT Newspaper Project; she will also talk about union
lists in general and the importance of resource sharing in
the library world.
D. "Landing the Right Job"
Carl Ochnio, Director of Career Services at Manchester
Community College, returns to lead a workshop on
understanding how to conduct a comprehensive job search
based on today's winning strategies. Learn how to research
opportunities, contact employers, network and tap into the
"hidden job market". Carl will follow up by teaching you
how to effectively enhance your marketing package and
approach employers with well-written, targeted cover
letters.
