Wadsworth Atheneum
Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001, 7:30 p.m., Main Library, Webster Hall
Eugene Gaddis discusses his biography, "Magician of the Modern: Chick Austin
and the Transformation of the Arts in America." Named director of Hartford's
Wadsworth Atheneum in 1927 at the age of twenty-six, Austin set about to
introduce modern art to America. Austin loved to teach, to paint, to give
lavish costume balls, and to dazzle audiences with his performances as a
magician. For his own family he built a Palladian villa, filling it with the
baroque and the Bauhaus and inviting all the locals in to see how it felt to
be modern. In short, he "did things sooner and more brilliantly than
anyone." This biography is a record of Austin's colorful life and of his
far-reaching influence on the way Americans look at and think about art.
