World," he tells the story of William Smith, who published the first
geological map in 1815. Smith's creative obsession eventually destroyed his
marriage and landed him in debtor's prison. Program co-sponsored by the
Bookworm bookstore. Due to the size of the anticipate audience size, this

of "The Book Borrower," lives in New Haven and teaches at Bennington College
    in Vermont.

    ALSO, but not on Saturday...

EUGENE R. GADDIS, Author, Archivist and Curator of the Austin House,
    Wadsworth Atheneum
Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001, 7:30 p.m., Main Library, Webster Hall
Eugene Gaddis discusses his biography, "Magician of the Modern: Chick Austin
and the Transformation of the Arts in America." Named director of Hartford's
Wadsworth Atheneum in 1927 at the age of twenty-six, Austin set about to
introduce modern art to America. Austin loved to teach, to paint, to give
lavish costume balls, and to dazzle audiences with his performances as a
magician. For his own family he built a Palladian villa, filling it with the
baroque and the Bauhaus and inviting all the locals in to see how it felt to
be modern. In short, he "did things sooner and more brilliantly than
anyone." This biography is a record of Austin's colorful life and of his
far-reaching influence on the way Americans look at and think about art.

Author Talk and Book Signing: A Woman's Education
Tuesday, Nov. 27, 7:00 p.m., West Hartford Town Hall Auditorium

continues an introspective and compelling study of her own life, including
her public role as the president of Smith College in Northampton, Mass.,
from 1975 to 1985. Conway offers a rare insight into her intellectual
development, and discusses her life as a college president in revealing
fashion. John Kenneth Galbraith has called "A Woman's Education," "the book
of the year." This program is co-sponsored by the Bookworm bookstore. No
    reservations will be taken.
