The CONNECTICUT LIBRARY ASSOCIATION's Legislative Committee has received the following information from Sharon Brettschneider at the Connecticut State Library about the outcome of last week's special session of the state legislature.
The following reductions were made in the State Library budget:
-$500,000 reduction in the $2 million for the Digital Library. This is in addition to an earlier reduction of $118,000. This leaves a budget of $1,382,000 for the current fiscal year. The State Library is assessing the impact of these reductions and will communicate with the library community as soon as possible.
-$25,000 reduction in State Aid to Public Libraries from the original appropriation of $472,109.
-$50,000 reduction in Connecticard reimbursements from the original appropriation of $726,028.
As co-chairs of the CLA Legislative Committee, we thank each of you who contacted your legislator(s) in support of iCONN, the Connecticut Digital Library, during the past couple of weeks. Your messages were definitely heard, though we obviously need to keep delivering and reinforcing them. The committee is now planning our strategy for the next regular session of the General Assembly in February and will be counting more than ever on your active participation in this effort.
