Connecticut Public Libraries:

The Connecticut State Library has begun a major initiative on emergent
literacy programs in public libraries called "Connecticut Libraries . .
. It's Never Too Early." The first step in this initiative is to
train children's librarians on research-based activities to promote
emergent literacy in preschoolers programming.

A full-day workshop is being offered at four different times and
locations. These workshops will be presented by Dr. Anne Fowler, a
Senior Scientist at the Haskins Laboratory where she is part of the
Early Reading Success Initiative.

The goals of the workshop will be to identify what preschoolers need to
know to become successful readers, to develop and monitor research-based
strategies for story hour, and to learn how to model and communicate
this information to parents and care-givers.
Please encourage the staff member in charge of children's services at
your library to attend this groundbreaking, research-based training.
These workshops will be followed by a state-wide publicity campaign and
grant opportunities for libraries. A flyer is being mailed to directors
and children's librarians. I've included the text of the flyer below.
