Books
(In order of usefulness)
Purcell, Connecticut in Transition: 1775-1818 (Wesleyan Univ. Press,
1963)
This book, originally published in 1918, is far and away the most valuable and
readable book on Connecticut History.
Greene, The Development of Religious Liberty in Connecticut (1905)
Morse, A Neglected Period of Connecticut's History 1818-1850 (Yale, 1933)
Morgan, Connecticut as a Colony and as a State, or One of the Original Thirteen
(1904)
Several rather moldy volumes of vaguely connected essays.
Osborn, History of Connecticut in Monographic Form (1925)
Ditto
Williamson, American Suffrage From Property to Democracy 1760-1865 (Princeton
1960)
Trumbull, Historical Notes on The Constitution of Connecticut (1901)
Loomis & Calhoun, The Judicial and Civil History of Connecticut (1895)
This takes the medal as a cure for insomnia.
Bischoff, The Theory of Separation of Powers as Practiced and Judicially
Recognized in the State of Connecticut (1931)
This is a thesis and reads like the title.
Articles
Connecticut Bar Journal
Biographies of several justices on the Connecticut Supreme Court of Errors
are quite valuable. Most are found in the various volumes from 1945-1948. In
addition, 53 Conn. Bar J.494 (1979) discusses Oliver Ellsworth, 57 Conn Bar
J.196 (1983) discusses the Tapping Reeve prosecution for seditious libel, 57
Conn. Bar J. (1983) discusses the federal court in Connecticut, and 40 Conn.
Bar J.440 (1966) discusses the Litchfield Law School.
Connecticut Law Review
A symposium of the Connecticut Constitution is found in Vol. 15, number
1. Especially valuable is Collier, "The Connecticut Declaration of Rights before
the Constitution of 1818: A Victim of Revolutionary Redefinition," 15 Conn.
Law R. 87 (1982).
In Vol. 18 is Weisbrod, "On Evidence and Intentions: The More Proof, The More Doubt," 18 Conn. Law R. 803 (1986), discussing Daggett's religious oath case, Atwood v. Welton.
In Vol. 8 is Kay, "The Rule-Making Authority and Separation of Powers in Connecticut", 8 Conn. Law R.1 (1975), which is a brilliant attack on the arrogation of power by the courts.

Minutes of the 1965 Constitutional Convention
Readily available at State Library.
Records of the State of Connecticut
12 volumes to date on period from 1776 through 1805. Many volumes, especially
the more recent, have good introductions by the editor.
Swift, A Vindication of the Calling of the Special Superior Court...[concerning
Peter Lung's Case] (1816)
A vituperative pamphlet; wonderful reading.
Daggett, Count the Cost (1804)
Ditto.
Bibliography
Collier, The Literature of Connecticut History (1983)
Table of Court Cases Cited
Court case citations generally refer, in that order, to the volume, the
identification of the court, and the page where the case begins in that volume.
Thus "14 Conn. 142" means the case in volume 14 of the reports of the Connecticut
Supreme Court of Errors starting at page 142. Prior to 1814, the reports of
the Connecticut Supreme Court of Errors and of the Superior Court were identified
by the reporter of the volume. For 1785-88 it was Ephraim Kirby; 1788-98, Jesse
Root; and 1802-14, Thomas Day. Opinions of the United States Supreme Court are
referred to as "U.S." Modern opinions of the Connecticut Superior Court are
referred to as "Conn. Supp." The volume and page references with "A." and "A.2d"
are alternate unofficial citations for Connecticut cases which are primarily
of use to out-of-state lawyers.
