 Aerial Photographs:

City Directories. The State Library has an extensive collection of original and microfilmed Connecticut directories and city directory maps from the early nineteenth century to the present.  Use the Connecticut State Library catalog ("CONSULS") to identify directories available for use at the State Library.  For example, you may do a “Keyword” search on “Norwich Conn directory.”

Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development. Contains Connecticut county maps, road maps, service delivery maps and more.

Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection Store. Sells books, maps and publications of the State Geological and Natural History Survey.

Connecticut Department of Transportation.  Provides online access to Connecticut town, traffic analysis, daily traffic and bicycle trail maps.

Connecticut Environmental Conditions Online. CT ECO provides a variety of tools for sharing natural resource and environmental information. Types of information include water resources, soils, open space, geology and aerial imagery. CT ECO is a partnership between the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection and the University of Connecticut.

Use the <hand> tool to move around on the map.  Click on the <binoculars> symbol to use the search function, which highlights the town name on the map.

Connecticut Towns and Counties.   Connecticut is currently divided into 169 "towns" with distinct geographical boundaries.  Each of these towns may contain incorporated cities or boroughs, as well as villages, post offices, and railroad depots without a distinct government.

Digital Sanborn Maps, Connecticut.  Available at the State Library.  Provides digital access to Sanborn fire insurance maps for Connecticut towns and cities between 1867 and 1970.

Federal Resources

Geographic Names Information System (GNIS).  Contains information about approximately 2 million physical and cultural geographic features in the United States and its territories.

GEOnet Names Server.  Provides access to the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency's (NGA) and the U.S. Board on Geographic Names' (US BGN) database of foreign geographic feature names. The database is the official repository of foreign place-name decisions approved by the US BGN.

Tiger Mapping Service.  Provides access to high-quality, detailed maps of the United States.

U.S. Census Bureau Maps and Cartographic Resources.  Contains links to printed and downloadable maps, boundary files, on-line mapping applications and much more.

U.S. Census Bureau Gazetteer.  A geographic place name look-up application based on 1990 census data.

Historical Resources

Bodleian Library Map Collection.  A selection of images from the Bodleian Library. Includes maps of the United States circa 1800, Boston, Massachusetts circa 1776 and much more.

Cartographic Creation of New England.  An online exhibition of early maps that chronicles the effects of European exploration and settlement in north-eastern North America.

David Rumsey Historical Map Collection.  Provides access to over 10,000 maps online. Collection includes rare 18th and 19th century North and South America maps and other cartographic materials. Historic maps of the Old World, Europe, Asia and Africa are also represented.

Historic USGS Maps of New England and New York.  An online collection of over 1500 USGS topographic maps. Includes complete geographical coverage of New England and New York from the 1890s to 1950s.

Map Collections: 1500-200404 (American Memory).  Provides access to the map collections at the Library of Congress. Organized into seven main categories including: Cities and Towns, Conservation and Environment, Discovery and Exploration, Cultural Landscapes, Military Battles and Campaigns, General Maps and Transportation and Communication.

Mapping History: The Darkwing Atlas Project.  Provides interactive representations of historical problems and illustrations of historical events and developments.

Massachusetts Historical Society Maps.  Contains maps and engravings of North America and the plans of 30 North American forts.

Office of Coast Guard Survey: Historical Map and Chart Collection.  Contains over 20,000 maps and charts from the late 1700s to the present. The collection includes some of the nation's earliest nautical charts, hydrographic surveys, topographic surveys, city plans and Civil War battle maps.

Yale Map Collection (Online Maps).  Provides access to antiquarian maps, historical city maps and the Lanman Globe Collection.

Other Resources

Canadian Geographical Names. T he Canadian Geographical Names Data Base (CGNDB) is the data bank of Canada's geographical names, maintained by the Geographical Names Section, part of the Centre for Topographic Information, Geomatics Canada, Natural Resources Canada.

Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names.  Provides a searchable database of approximately 1 million place names for the world.

Perry-Castaneda Library (Univ. of Texas).  A collection of more than 250,000 maps covering all areas of the world.

United Nations Maps and Geographic Information Resources.  Includes general and thematic maps at the country level.
