Reference
We encourage visiting the Government Information Services Unit in order to make
the most effective use of its resources. The staff will help in-house patrons
devise and outline search strategies; use catalogs, indexes, and research guides
to identify and locate pertinent library and archival resources; use the
collections and electronic reference
resources; and operate photocopiers and microform equipment.
The Government Information Services Unit provides specialized services to state agencies and to teachers and students.
The Government Information Services Unit staff responds to telephone, letter, e-mail, and fax inquiries regarding the unit's collections and services, and to brief, factual, ready-reference questions that pertain to Connecticut government.
The State Library receives hundreds of telephone calls, letters, e-mail messages, and faxes each month. We attempt to answer all in a timely manner, but in order to serve the thousands of researchers who visit the State Library in person each year, we cannot ensure immediate replies to telephone, e-mail, fax, or mail reference requests. Reference requests relating to general reference or government information are normally answered in the order they are received.
For more immediate information about government, consult the Government sections of the CSL Research Resources page and/or contact a local library.
Collections
The Government Information Services Unit maintains comprehensive collections
of Connecticut and United States government publications dating from the late
1700's to the present. These collections, numbering well over a million and
a half pieces, support the Library's roles as the Regional
Federal Depository for Connecticut and Rhode Island, and as the
Connecticut State Documents repository.
Special collections maintained by the Unit include: Civil Service Study Guides; and a Safety Library of publications and videos which is maintained jointly by the Department of Administrative Services and the State Library.
The Unit maintains a core collection of general reference materials, and the Library's general collections which emphasize public policy, social issues, economics, business, labor, and education.
