What am I searching?
Find Books, DVDs and more in CT Libraries searches more than five million titles in the collections of more than
400 libraries in Connecticut. Items in these collections include books, movies, audiobooks, music, magazines and journals.
With Find Books, DVDs and more...you can use tabs to limit your search to any of the following material types:
- Combined Search (Books, Movies, Audiobooks, Music, some magazines/journals)
- Movies (DVDs and VHS)
- Audiobooks (Downloadable Audiobooks, books on CD, etc.)
- Music (CD, cassette, etc.)
- Magazines/Journals (all magazines in print and microfilm)
Search results are returned in order of relevance to the search request.

How do I search?
Searching is as easy as entering a title, or words from a title and/or an author's name in the Search box and clicking the Search button. For example, if I wanted the book "Gone with the Wind." I could enter gone wind margaret mitchell into the search box and click the Combined Search button. The system will display a list of titles based on the search terms. Click one of the titles on the list and you will see the full description and, if you scroll down, a list of libraries that own the item.

You can narrow your search to a specific format or media type using the tabs that appear just above the search box. There are tabs for Books, Movies, Audiobooks, Music, and Magazines/Journals. For example, if I wanted to see what libraries own "Gone with the Wind" on video, I'd click the tab for Movies and enter gone with the wind into the search box and click the Search Movies button.
You can further narrow your search using the pull-down menu that appears next to the search box. The menu contains, Author, Title, Title Begins With, and Title Exact among other options. Using the example of Gone with the Wind on video, I could click the Movies tab, type gone with the wind into the search box, use the pull down menu to choose "Title Exact" and then click the Search Movies button.

What are the other links (Advance Search, Browse Search, etc.) below the search box?

Advanced search: takes you to a page where you can limit your search even further. You will have 3 search boxes and be able to limit your search for items published in specific years or a range of years. (For details, go back to the iCONN start page, click Advanced Search, and click the Help button in the top-right hand corner of the Advanced Search page.)
Browse search: takes you to a page where you can browse the contents of the catalog. You can enter your search terms and click search and you will see a list of items matching your terms. You can click an item on the list and get a full description of the item or items. (For details, go back to the iCONN start page, click Browse Search, and click the Help button in the top-right hand corner of the Browse Search page.)
View My Lists: takes you to a page where you can login and access any list or lists that you have previously created from a Find Books...search.
Request Tracking: takes you to a page where you can login and view the status of your interlibrary loan requests. (Note: This link will only appear if your library participates interlibrary loan through iCONN. Here is a
list of libraries participating in interlibrary loan through the statewide library catalog.)

After doing a search, how do I return to the start page?
There are three ways that you can return to the start page:
- Click on the Back button (more than once, if necessary)
- If you click on Modify Search, New Search or Start Over, you will be taken to the Advanced Search page (Modify Search will retain the search you entered). On any of those pages, click on the Return to Start Page link.
- If all else fails, go to: iconn.org

After clicking on any of the links under More iCONN Content or any of the links at the bottom of the start page, how do I return to the start page?
When you click on any of these links, the desired screen will open in a new tab on your browser. To return to the start page, simply close that tab on your browser.

How do I use the zip code feature in reQuest?
When viewing the full record of any title returned from a search in reQuest, in the section called "Locations Information," click on Miles
and it will list all the locations by mileage from the default zip code, which displays as a link on the screen (Figure 8). The default
zip code is the zip code of your home library. If you want to change the default zip code, just click on the zip code and enter any valid
Connecticut zip code on the next screen. If you want to change the list to alphabetical sequence, just click on the Institution link.
You can also limit search results to display only those libraries that are within a specific number of miles from the zip code you have
specified. This setting is done in Advanced Search (select â€œLibrary Location and/or Distanceâ€). Note: the limit by distance feature
works only in the "All Libraries" mode. Also, when you use this limit feature, the zip code that displays on the search results
screen ("Locations Information") will not be hyperlinked.

How do I limit search results by groups of libraries in reQuest?
If your library has configured this feature, it allows you to limit search results to specific libraries (e.g., this library only; nearby
libraries only; etc.). This feature is found in Advanced Search (select "Library Location and/or Distance") (Figure 9). If you click on the
drop-down arrow in the upper right corner, it will show you the limit choices you have, and allow you to select the specific library or
libraries you want to limit your searches to. If only one choice ("All Libraries") displays, then you can only search in the All Libraries
mode. When you set this limit in Advanced Search, the limit takes effect only in Advanced Search; Keyword Search
will remain set at "All Libraries."

How is the local library name at the bottom of the screen derived?
The "identity statement" at the bottom of the screen (Figure 10) identifies the specific library that iCONN associates you with based on how
you logged into the system (i.e., either by using the number on the library card that was issued by a specific library or by using the
Internet address of the library's computer).

Can I search for an exact phrase?
Phrase searching is available in the reQuest Main and Magazine Catalogs. (Reminder: it is also available in most of the iCONN databases).
At times you may only want to retrieve results that include an exact phrase. To do this, enclose in "quotation marks" the phrase to be
used in the search. Some databases do not support phrase searching, so although entering a phrase in quotes initiates a phrase query, the
user may find the results will not be limited to the specific phrase that was entered, or the database may report back that this particular
type of search is not supported.

When you are looking at the list of libraries that own a title in
reQuest, you may see a small red checkmark
beside the library name. Click on this to
see if the item is available or checked out. You
may also see the status of many libraries if
they share a system.

How do I request an item in reQuest, the Statewide Library Catalog?
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is the process by which a library requests material from, or supplies material to, another library in order
to fulfill a request from a patron. reQuest, the Statewide Library Catalog, has an ILL feature that allows you to place requests for
material that your home library does not own, and to track those requests.
Note: Not all libraries in Connecticut participate in ILL through the reQuest system.
Here's a list of libraries that currently
participate. If your home library is not on this list, you may search reQuest, but
you will have to contact your home library and ask them how to request the item you want.

- you can request material from the statewide catalog right from your local library's catalog. Questions? Please contact your local library.
To request an item using the reQuest catalog, follow the steps below:
- Notice the "Request this item" button that appears on the left-hand side of the page under "What would you like to do next?" menu. (If you do not see a "Request this item" button, you are in a 'generic' version of the catalog and you will need to go to your library-specific version. To do that, go to www.iconn.org and enter your library card number and re-do your search. Your library card number is what associates you with your library.)
- Click the Request This Item button. A new window will open which will display the interlibrary loan request form.
- Complete the information. (See screen shot below.) We suggest that you use the same spelling of your name and the same password for all of
your interlibrary loan requests in this system. By doing this, you will be able to track all of your requests at one time rather than individually.
- Click the Submit button. This will electronically send your request to staff at your home library and they will try to obtain the material for you.

How do I track the status of my requests?
To track your ILL requests:
- Login to iCONN using your library card number.
- Click Request Tracking in the box that contains "Find Books, CDs, DVDs and More in CT Libraries" (see screen shot below). This will take you to the tracking login screen.
- Type your last name, first name into the first box labeled "Patron Name (Last, First):" Type your name exactly as you typed them on the 'Request This Item' form. If, for example, you use Steve Smith on one request and Stephen Smith or S. Smith on another request, then you would have to track each request separately under each name. We suggest you use the same version of your name and the same password for all of your requests so that you can track them all at the same time.
- Type your password exactly as you typed it on the 'Request This Item' form.
- Click the Submit button. The screen will refresh and you will see a list of the items that you have requested and their current status.
