Librarian 1/Government Records Archivist - State Library

The Connecticut State Library is recruiting for a full time Librarian 1/Government Records Archivist in the State Archives. The incumbent will work under the direction of the Assistant State Archivist and will perform archival tasks for records from State government, local governments, and other records.

Duties will include: Assisting in the accessioning of records in the State Archives; engaging in the arrangement and description of records and creating finding aids to these records both in electronic and hard copy forms using current descriptive standards such as EAD and DACS; planning for and engaging in preservation/conservation of records being processed; maintaining archival databases; answering complex reference questions regarding accessioned records; making public presentations and writing articles for appropriate newsletters regarding the State Archives; working effectively in project settings, in teams and with others, and performing related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Required: A graduate degree in American History, Archival Administration, Public History and/or Library Science with a significant archival curriculum; knowledge of professional principles and practices of library science including classification systems, reference sources and techniques, acquisition, cataloging and filing, bibliographic sources of information and library automation; knowledge of library administration principles and techniques; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; ability to analyze and solve problems relating to library methods and procedures.

Preferred Experience: Evidence of the completion of a significant archival processing project. Experience with or willingness to learn current descriptive standards such as EAD and DACS. Knowledge or awareness of digitization procedures and standards, including metadata creation. Experience supervising others. Ability to balance multiple projects. Ability to lift 40 pounds. Experience with Microsoft Office software.

Public Services Librarian 1 – State Library Reference Unit

The Connecticut State Library is recruiting for a full time Public Services Librarian 1. The incumbent will work under the direction of the State Library Unit Head and be accountable for performing a full range of professional library duties and providing reference and public service in the Library. Weekend (Saturday) hours, on a rotating schedule, will be required for this position.

Duties Include: Assisting patrons in locating and obtaining information, in person, on the telephone, through correspondence, email or other electronic platforms; conducting research in response to patron inquiries; providing information on library activities, facilities, rules and services; explaining and assisting in use of reference sources, catalogs and indexes, in all formats; explaining and assisting in use of library equipment; working effectively and collaboratively with other library staff; may plan and direct or carry out special projects; may create and contribute content to Library web page; may conduct workshops; may serve as liaison to library groups and organizations; may compile reports and statistics; may supervise and/or train paraprofessional, clerical staff or summer work staff; and performing related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications Required: A Master’s degree in Library Science or Information Science from a library school accredited by the American Library Association. Knowledge of professional principles and practices of library science including classification systems, reference sources and techniques, acquisition, cataloging and filing, bibliographic sources of information and library automation; ability to formulate internet and database search strategies, knowledge of library administration principles and techniques; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; ability to analyze and solve problems relating to library methods and procedures.

Preferred Experience: Knowledge of a broad range of current and historical reference, bibliographic and collection development tools in both hard copy and electronic formats. Ability to lift materials or boxes weighing up to 25 pounds.
